[1999] Since last summer...

It seems strange to be getting to be known -- even ever so slightly -- in other parts of the world. An article on my work will be appearing in the next issue of a magazine published in Australia, International Artist. The article was written by Ron Ranson, himself a writer and artist, an Englishman who conducts painting workshops far and wide, including in Port Clyde. He often pops over to Monhegan during the summer. Later he will do an article for the same magazine on his private collection, in which I am proud to be represented. Anyone interested in learning more about this new unusual magazine, or to obtain a reprint of the article, can contact them at: International Artist, P.O. Box 469068, Escondido, California, 92046 or call 760-796-6540.

Those who watch Guiding Light, a popular soap opera that has appeared on CBS television for years, can see reproductions of paintings of mine on the hospital walls. When those intense conversations are taking place in the corridor of the hospital, if you can tear your eyes away, look for the Goldsmith posters behind the actors.

This past spring, the Watercolor Art Society--Houston (WASH) showed a painting of mine, "Pagentry," in its annual juried show. Last fall I was represented once again in the Art in the Round Barn juried show in Waitsfield, Vermont, as well as the invitational show at the Mary Bryan Art Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont.

I should not overlook my own book, Watercolor Bold & Free, which has sold nearly 70,000 copies and would have celebrated its twentieth anniversary next year. Inevitably, the book did go out of print, in May 1998. Watson-Guptill, the publishers, tell me they are planning a paperbound edition next spring. Meanwhile secondhand copies may be obtained at varying prices from out-of-print dealers via the Internet.

Perhaps soon afterward another environmental book by Mitchell Thomashow will be published by MIT Press. This book will explore spiritual attitudes toward the environment. Like his first book, this one will have a cover reproducing one of my watercolors.

I do have copies of the 45-minute videotape, Watercolor Bold & Free, demonstrating some watercolor techniques. This film was made by my son, Paul, a California-based director of photography.

This winter I had a call from a collector with an unusual request. He specializes in Maine paintings, and particularly Monhegan paintings, done in the forties through the sixties. He says work done in this period is still available at reasonable prices and has not been swallowed up by museums or the artists' families. He chose one of mine, "Monhegan Village," painted in the mid-sixties. I well remember the painting site. It was a gray day and I found a way of getting into the Island Inn tower where I could work peacefully and dry. I never told anyone how I was able to climb into the tower, and I don't intend to reveal my secret ever.
