[2003] Since last summer...

Have we become a warlike nation -- in stark contrast to what most of us believe Monhegan represents? A peaceful island dedicated to preserving nature, hiking, viewing the headlands, lobstering, and enjoying art -- this is what Monhegan represents. Hopefully, this atmospherre could last longer than warfare. We like to think so.

Art is a great survivor. Even in small ways.

I have painted on the island for each year since 1964. This publication of "Since Last Summer" has appeared for 17 years. The Gallery-by-the-Sea in Port Clyde is celebrating its 15 years of showing veteran artists this summer, and I am included. Others of my paintings can be seen at the Lupine Gallery.

Perhaps a more lasting version of my work will appear about a year from this summer. A book called Spirit of Place, by Carl Little, will be published by Hudson Hills Press in Manchester, Vermont, noted for its handsome output. Little wrote much of the text of Monhegan, The Artists' Island. My book will contain 60 full-color illustrations of watercolor paintings of mine chosen as favorites by Lynda Goldsmith, Doris Birminghan, and myself. Spirit of Place will be priced at about $45.

Another book mentioning me came out since last summer. This was called Friendship, by James Grunebaum, and was published by the State University of New York Press. The book reveals attitudes of friendship as written by several Greek and other philosophers. Its cover shows a painting of mine of the Monhegan shores.

Forget success. We all have failures. With long and careful effort, and with the help of an expert, I applied for a grant to help pay for my forthcoming book. Do you realize what this takes? Hundreds of questions need to be answered on several pages of application -- but first one must get permission from the granters to apply for a grant. This I did. So did over 3,000 hopeful applicants. Less than 6 percent of them were chosen. I was not one of them, possibly because grants are almost never given to a book about an artist.

Moral: Don't bother to appy for a grant. Paint instead.
