A Monhegan artist for the past 37 summers, Lawrence Goldsmith often recollects his Maine impressions when he paints in his Vermont studio during the winter. Lobster Cove, the Headlands, and Clearing in the Woods appear again and again. Not that he does exact scenes. He has been called a "Zen master of watercolor," inspired by the spiritual or emotional essence of a scene. Ron Ranson, the English artist-writer, says in one of his books that Goldsmith doesn't paint how Monhegan looks. He paints how it feels.
The artist shows his work twice a week through the summer at his studio on Monhegan. For information about times call 207-596-6098 during the summer or e-mail during the rest of the year.
